PE-112 - Virtual Patients: "Keeping It Real" in Simulation Clinic

Simulation clinic, which typically occupies the first two years of dental education, should have as its main goal the preparation of students for clinical patient care. The traditional pre-clinical format of students executing individual clinical procedures on typodonts or extracted teeth outside of the context of patient care falls short of this goal. This program will present a format for the use of virtual patients in the pre-clinic setting that closely replicates patient care, where students conduct an "exam", arrive at diagnoses, develop a treatment plan and then implement the treatment on a typodont with simulated patient problems.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the format for a virtual patient exercise in the preclinic setting.
Develop a typodont that simulates the dental problems of a virtual patient.
Discuss the learning impact of a virtual patient exercise on students from both student and faculty reflections.
