PA-118 - Tools to Mitigate Risks of Prescription Misuse for Dental Educators
Monday, March 16, 2020
2:30 PM – 3:30 PM
CE: 1
Increasing awareness of the risks associated with prescription medications has left many oral health professionals feeling poorly equipped to manage psychosocially and medically complex dental patients. This program describes efforts underway at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine and Tufts University School of Dental Medicine to develop easily accessible and flexible educational materials and support for predoctoral, specialty and continuing education programs to meet this need. You will learn strategies to apply innovative educational strategies within your dental curricula and will leave with an outline of clinical best practices, a sample case and guidance to enhance your programs and incorporate strategies for safer management of at-risk patient populations. (Note: Due to travel recent faculty travel restrictions imposed at Columbia University, the program Chair will summarize their data and provide additional content)
Learning Objectives:
Describe key clinical standards involved in substance use risk assessment in dental settings.
Identify opportunities for integrating controlled substance risk mitigation into preclinical and clinical dental curricula.
Recognize available resources for technical assistance and educational materials that support safer prescribing practices and specialist referral for at-risk patient populations.
