W-102 - Supporting Inclusivity by Addressing Sexual Harassment of Students by Patients
Monday, March 16, 2020
10:30 AM – 11:30 AM
CE: 1
We teach students to communicate effectively with patients and develop relationships that build trust and rapport. But what happens when a patient violates that trust and makes sexual comments? Because the harasser is a patient, faculty may ignore it, leaving students feeling uncomfortable and unsupported. To maintain safe and inclusive learning environments, we must raise awareness and develop policies to address this issue. During this interactive session, participants will frame the issue, explore the impact, identify key policy considerations, practice bystander intervention and discover a pathway to real strategies to better address sexual harassment by patients at their home institutions.
Learning Objectives:
Describe two effects of sexual harassment by patients on students.
List two best practices to address sexual harassment by patients that support an inclusive learning environment.
Identify at least one strategy that could be implemented at their home institution to address sexual harassment by patients.
