PA-103 - Oral Oncology/Hospice Care Continuum: A Pathway for Teaching Patient-centered Care
Monday, March 16, 2020
2:30 PM – 3:30 PM
CE: 1
The American Cancer Society estimates nearly 50,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cavity or oropharyngeal cancer in 2019, of whom nearly 10,000 succumb to death. Patients with advanced disease require multidisciplinary care including dental clearance, surgery, chemotherapy/radiation, pain management, nutritional support, physical therapy and supportive care directed at disease, therapeutic complications or psychosocial sequelae. You will learn about our experience with development and implementation of an annual collaborative care conference centered on an oral oncology hospice case patient. You will work through the case, explore opportunities for collaborative curricula promoting integrated care, discuss challenges and develop strategies to overcome barriers to implementation.
Learning Objectives:
Outline development of an oral oncology-hospice case for teaching interprofessional collaborative care.
Discuss the outcomes of this curricular initiative on promoting shared decision making and understanding differences in perspectives and priorities among the various members of a simulated patient care team.
Identify opportunities for integration of collaborative curricula at their institutions and offer strategies to circumvent potential barriers to implementation.
