SP-110 - Creating Pathways for Residency: Designing/Refining the Externship Opportunity
Saturday, March 14, 2020
11:00 AM – 12:00 PM
CE: 1
With an increase in undergraduate positions while residency position numbers remain fairly stable, the competition for residency positions translates into a desire to evaluate potential applicants prior to a structured, time-limited interview process.
Various styles of externships exist, ranging from one-day observations to week-long program visits. This session will assist in identifying strategies to enhance student-focused, externship opportunities or create new ones. It will also discuss how to support student applicants in identifying programs with which they could apply for externship and tips for the construction or reconfiguring of student-focused, program-enhancing externship opportunities for improved efficacy.
Learning Objectives:
Identify challenges programs face creating and implementing externship opportunities and students face selecting externship opportunities.
Discuss student-driven factors that improve the likelihood of a successful externship experience.
Recognize links between externship participation and performance in residency training.
