PA-106 - Designing Service-learning Experiences to Maximize Student and Community Impact
Monday, March 16, 2020
4:30 PM – 5:30 PM
CE: 1
To assist in reducing health disparities, oral health professionals have a responsibility to deliver care to vulnerable populations. Specific knowledge and a defined set of skills is necessary to understand how to provide optimal care in a population-focused manner. Dental hygienists are ideally placed to minimize oral health care disparities experienced by vulnerable populations. Providing the specific knowledge and skills required should be a curricular focus of dental hygiene programs. Designing curriculum with didactic components and community engagement that support service-learning experiences is essential to giving graduates the knowledge and skills required to effectively treat at-risk populations.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the barriers to oral health care faced by vulnerable populations.
Understand the curricular components required to provide the knowledge required to treat vulnerable populations.
Engage community organizations to provide valuable in-service learning opportunities.
