SP-100 - Chair of the Board Symposium—Faculty Development for Student Enrichment: Gauging Dental Faculty Burnout and Creating a Culture of Resilience
Monday, March 16, 2020
10:30 AM – 12:00 PM
Dentistry is an inherently stressful practice. Dental school faculty have additional responsibilities outside of patient care—including research, education, mentorship and administrative responsibilities—that can lead to work-related stress, making faculty uniquely positioned to develop burnout. Resilience means “bouncing back” from difficult experiences such as trauma, tragedy, threats or significant sources of stress (family, relationships, health, workplace and/or financial stressors). Are there best practices for reducing burnout among faculty and creating a culture of resilience in dental schools? Participants will complete a burnout self-assessment, identify ways to create change in their schools and brainstorm cultural ways to reduce stress and promote resilience.
Self-assess their personal level of burnout using a validated burnout inventory.
Identify the key dimensions of burnout and the early warning signs of dental faculty burnout.
Brainstorm potential elements of a faculty development program to create an environment that would reduce professional stress.
