SP-121 - Chair of the ADEA Board of Directors Symposium—Celebrating Diversity Through Teaching Strategies and Administrative Policies
Sunday, March 15, 2020
2:00 PM – 3:30 PM
CE: 1.5
Every dental education institution must maintain a humanistic environment that is respectful of faculty, staff, students and patients, regardless of race, ethnicity, sex, gender identity, nationality, socioeconomic status or any other element of diversity. The most inclusive institutions celebrate these differences to make a safe, welcoming environment for all. Four institutions share their perspectives on this issue. We will discuss a tool for exploring and teaching implicit bias as well as share strategies to develop and assess cultural competence in students. Finally, we will explore ways to create and measure a humanistic institutional climate through policies, training, development and assessment best practices.
Learning Objectives:
Create and implement policies focusing on an environment that facilitates equitable treatment in a climate that fosters success and achievement.
Implement student, staff and faculty development programs and devise assessment plans aimed at measuring campus climate.
Devise student cultural competence curriculum and assessment experiences.
