Studies have shown students in dental health professions face challenges related to patient care and how they cope with their own mental health and well-being. Colley, et al (2018) reported the dental curriculum and environment are known to be highly stressful experiences. The top stress-provoking factor includes patient care. Transitioning from preclinical, simulated patient care to the clinical curriculum oftentimes is the most challenging for the dental student. Role play provides experiences for pre-clinical students to become more acquainted with the challenges of clinical assignments. Hence, this teaching strategy may promote stress reduction and an increased sense of well-being in students.
Learning Objectives:
Define the “role play” teaching strategy in the context of preparing the preclinical dental student for the challenges of their clinical, patient care assignments.
Describe three types of role play teaching strategies used to prepare the preclinical dental student for the practice of comprehensive dental care.
List the anticipated outcomes of the role play/case scenario teaching strategy.
