SP-118 - Move Over Millennials . . . Gen Z is the New Teaching Challenge
Sunday, March 15, 2020
2:00 PM – 3:00 PM
CE: 1
“Generation Z,” the generation after the millennials, grew up with unparalleled technological influence from smartphones to social media, online applications, etc. This generation of learners demonstrate the shortest attention span and prefer concise, focused, individualized, engaged, technologically advanced learning tools. Traditional teaching tools, such as classroom lectures and textbooks, do not appeal to them. As this generation is about to enter dental schools in the U.S., education must be tailored to provide a more “personalized approach.” Speakers will discuss challenges faced and teaching methodologies successfully applied in their dental education courses. They will discuss ways to incorporate a more “learner-centered” teaching environment.
Learning Objectives:
Identify potential challenges faced by faculty in dental education environment for Generation Z.
Describe changes in learning strategies used by the new generation of students and adapt dental education courses to them.
Develop teaching strategies applicable to Generation Z such as incorporation of online tools, audio-visual format, group discussions and application based materials which are more engaging and acceptable to them.
