Education in Oral Radiology is unique among dental disciplines as it involves teaching students to recognize visual patterns as opposed to memorizing facts or learning functional skills. Students who never learn this skill freeze up when they are presented with real cases requiring radiographic interpretive diagnosis. In radiology education, the teacher must focus efforts on variations in radiologic pathology descriptors, i.e. “well-defined”, “corticated”, “radiolucent”, “expansile”, “resorptive”, etc. During this seminar, you will learn how to teach by familiarizing students with various descriptors and how that practice directly impacts students’ ability to develop appropriate differential diagnoses.
Learning Objectives:
Explain how focusing on radiographic pathology descriptors can improve student learning in oral radiology.
Describe various radiology descriptors and be able to identify them in radiographs.
Apply concepts learned to improve student learning in both didactic and clinical settings.
