W-104 - A Path to HEALing Interprofessional Discourse
Saturday, March 14, 2020
11:00 AM – 12:00 PM
CE: 1
Dental educational environments are increasingly affected by interpersonal differences of values, beliefs and attitudes that detrimentally derail and distract from learning. University of California, San Francisco, School of Dentistry has adopted a model to facilitate discussion around topics of diversity and inclusivity called HEALS. This framework establishes a community norm that demands engagement in addressing uncomfortable, disturbing or otherwise disrespectful situations, while cultivating and nurturing a learning environment. We will walk through the five steps of HEALS—halt, engage, allow, learn, synthesize—and explain how each step addresses social issues and concerns that impact learning in the educational environment.
Learning Objectives:
Explain how HEALS can facilitate difficult conversations that occur in the preclinical and predoctoral learning environments.
Describe a situation in which the HEALS framework could increase inclusivity in the learning environment.
Identify two concerns that can emerge for the involved parties during HEALS conversations and how to manage these concerns to maintain a productive discussion for all parties.
