Presentation Description / Session Abstract: Despite the advances in veterinary medicine regarding knowledge, technology and specialization, we might be falling behind on quality, outcomes, costs and equity. That is the value provided to patients and owners could improve. Value is defined as health outcomes achieved that matter to patients relative to the cost of achieving those outcomes. Improving value requires either improving one or more outcomes without raising costs or lowering the costs without negatively affecting outcomes, or both. In order to advance, veterinary medicine needs to learn continuously. However, as in human healthcare, the available knowledge is seldom applied to improve the patient’s care experience, and the information collected by the care experience is also rarely used to advance the available knowledge. In order to improve patient care, veterinary medicine should embrace a culture that promotes continues learning and application of that gained knowledge to better outcomes and understand costs. In short improving value of care will translate to improving the client’s experience and the patient’s quality of life.
