Presentation Description / Session Abstract: While the incidence of foodborne disease in dogs and cats is unknown and is probably low, illness (and rarely death) can occur as a result pathogen exposure from food and treats. Further, there are human disease risks, as has been clearly identified with Salmonella and pet treats. Microbiological food safety includes concepts from ingredient sourcing to household handling, with many steps in between. Consideration of disease risks, high risk foods and behaviours, and infection control methods, is important to minimize the burden of disease in humans and animals.
Learning Objectives:
To identify relevant foodborne pathogens that can be associated with different types of pet food.
To identify control points and educational approaches to reduce the risk of disease.
