Gayle graduated from the University of Cambridge and completed an internship and then large animal internal medicine and critical care residency at the Royal Veterinary College in London. She then completed a PhD investigating aortic valve prolapse at the University of Nottingham. She is currently Professor in Veterinary Internal Medicine and Critical Care. Her main interests are large animal cardiology, gastroenterology, imaging (particularly ultrasonography) and emergency and critical care.
