Presentation Description / Session Abstract: Serum creatinine is a frequently used but unfortunately insensitive means for monitoring renal function in large animal species. The goal of this session is to review other methods for montoring renal function including sediment examination, urine specific gravity, urine electrolyte clearances, urine dip sticks, urine protein creatinine ratios and transcutaneous renal ultrasound. Using a case based format this session will review indications to and how to perform the individual tests, how to interpret the results and potential implications for the patient.
Understand how to perform and interpret the results of renal function testing
Understand the implication of abnormal renal function testing results for the patient
Develop a plan to monitor renal function of horses at risk for or with renal disease
