This session will address underscore the importance of education as a form of scholarship and as a vehicle for effective career promotion, whether in academia or private practice. Faculty will discuss myriad challenges faced by clinicians who want to engage in educational scholarship. These include competing clinical demands, lack of institutional recognition for educational efforts, lack of resources for acquiring teaching and educational research skills, limited funding for educational research, and seemingly narrow recognition by clinical science journals of the importance and foundation of educational research, and how this is closely linked to clinical research paradigms. Proposed solutions to overcome obstacles to successful scholarship publication will be discussed by faculty, including designing educational projects that are clinically relevant, yet are based on sound foundations that utilize educational theories of learning and higher levels of outcomes and assessment.
