How can rheumatologists harness the power of the human genome to treat patients with rheumatic diseases? At this year’s Gluck Memorial Lecture, Farshid Guilak, PhD, the Mildred B. Simon Research Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Washington University, will review the current state of the art research on stem cell therapies for treatment of rheumatic diseases, as well as their limitations. He will discuss potential approaches to combine stem cells and genome-editing techniques such as CRISPR/Cas9 in bone and joint diseases, and he will share exciting advances in regenerative medicine to treat patients with rheumatic disease. Dr. Guilak is also Director of Research for the Shriners Hospitals for Children in St. Louis and Co-Director of the Washington University Center of Regenerative Medicine.
