The second session in an introduction to the basics of immunology for healthcare professionals will expand participants’ knowledge of rheumatic diseases and treatment. This bootcamp will provide a basic framework to better understand the pathophysiology of autoimmunity, or when “good cells go bad.” This session will describe in detail the mechanisms of autoimmunity and the subsequent inflammatory response that drives various rheumatic conditions. Faculty will discuss clinical decision making through case studies of connective tissue and inflammatory autoimmune conditions. They will present an overview of the protein and cellular components of the acute inflammatory response as an introduction to the concept of cytokines as therapeutic targets for arthritis and other inflammatory diseases.
