Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune disease marked by a great degree of heterogeneity. Alterations in several immune cell subsets have been observed in SLE. This session will cover the key mechanisms that underlie the immune abnormalities in SLE, which can provide crucial insights into the heterogeneity of this disease. Participants will acquire critical knowledge related to the development of novel therapeutic strategies for this disease.

• Review the key genetic and non-genetic contributors to SLE
• Describe key pathways and immune cell alterations that mediate SLE
• Appraise how complex interactions of diverse pathways could lead to patient heterogeneity
• Describe how specific medications may target salient pathogenic mechanisms in SLE
