Needs-based education and patient engagement are key in supporting self-management in people with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases, and may help improve their outcomes. This session will review the current research evidence and resources available for rheumatology team members to support self-management. Participants will be able to discuss current evidence supporting patient education and its application in practice, identify methods for delivering needs-based education, leverage technology and maximize patient engagement, and enhance their skills to improve engagement of the entire interprofessional rheumatology team.

Learning Objectives:

• Describe the value of patient education programs to support self-management and improve outcomes in rheumatic disease care
• Review current evidence and widely available resources that rheumatology team members may utilize to support self-management in their patients
• Evaluate different strategies to apply self-management principles in daily rheumatology practice
• Identify methods to effectively deliver needs-based education to different patient populations
• Describe how healthcare technology may be utilized to facilitate patient education and self-management efforts in rheumatology
