Rheumatologists struggle with the diagnosis of axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) because clinical and lab features of inflammatory back pain lack sensitivity and specificity. This leaves diagnosis very much dependent on imaging evaluation, especially MRI. But rheumatologists do not receive training in MRI and often work in settings where radiologist expertise in axSpA is lacking. Often, it is unclear when to order MRI, what type of MRI to order, which lesions have diagnostic capacity and how to discriminate from false positives. In this highly interactive session, participants will use web-based tools, conference WiFi or their smartphones to respond in real time to prototypic cases of SpA/non-SpA. A multidisciplinary panel, including radiologists, then discuss the audience responses and provide evidence-based content. The session will wrap up with experts in axSpA from the SPARTAN group responses assessing participants' responses. Faculty will demonstrate how expert clinical and imaging interpretation are combined with evidence to formulate a diagnosis in real-world practice. The audience responses will also be used to conduct a quality improvement project that will be published in the future.
