Dr. Schultzel is a California native, born in Walnut Creek, California. He attended the University of California San Diego for his undergraduate studies. His medical education then took him to Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in the San Francisco Bay Area. His residency was in San Diego, New York, and New Jersey. He graduated from a Minimally Invasive Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship in Houston prior to moving back to San Diego.
Dr. Schultzel specialized in Minimally invasive Colon and Rectal Surgery, General surgery, and Robotics. He performs surgical procedures at the Sharp Hospital system and in the Scripps Hospital System. Dr. Schultzel is part of a large group of subspecialists known as United Medical Doctors.
Dr. Schultzel since graduating fellowship has performed more than 1000 robotic surgeries in just a little more than 4 years. He is one of the highest volume surgeons on the West Coast.
In Dr. Schultzel's free time, he teaches kendo (Japanese fencing), surfs, scuba dives, and hangs out with his famous Great Dane Thor von Schultz.
