The Mark Kalina Jr. Foundation
Mark Kalina is a survivor of a near-fatal, pedestrian-train accident that resulted in the loss of his legs. Since that day, Mark has pushed himself far beyond what he himself thought was possible. The nature of his accident encouraged him to share his story and become an advocate for rail safety. He was named the Spokesperson for the National safety campaign of Operation Lifesaver, the United States’ largest rail safety organization. The support he had from his family, friends and community during his recovery inspired the creation of The Mark Kalina Jr Foundation, which supports victims of traumatic injury on their journey toward greater independence. Mark has continued to push himself and his prosthetics by competing in two Tough Mudder obstacle course races. Mark was recognized by Crain’s Cleveland as the class of 2019’s “Forty under 40”. In addition to his volunteer work, Mark is a Senior Analyst supporting the Trauma Recovery Team at The MetroHealth System in Cleveland, Ohio. He is now living his new normal with his wife and two young children in Northeastern Ohio.
