At the 2019 Convention the AIA struck out on a bold course, committing on behalf of the architectural profession to assume responsibility for building performance and code compliance with regard to greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts. In this workshop we will review the broad outlines of this commitment, describe the proposed steps to achieve the established milestones, and speculate on the future evolution of code development and compliance. A central topic will be the achievement of zero energy targets as mandatory per adopted codes and standards. The role of the Massachusetts' Stretch Code in the evolution of energy codes will also be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
Discuss the commitment of the AIA regarding the role of architects in code development and compliance.
Describe the steps planned to transform the architectural profession into stewards of the built environment.
Anticipate a future role for the architectural profession regarding environmental performance.
Recognize the nature of the proposed zero energy code amendment in the 2021 IECC and its potential adoption in Massachusetts as the basis for the Stretch Energy Code.
