No longer is a classroom four walls and a ceiling. From first grade to higher education, classrooms are increasingly becoming a physical and a virtual space both, having to accommodate clear in-person communication, as well as the technology for virtual communication and sharing presentation materials. The types of classrooms we are asked to design include active learning, remote (or distance learning) /capture, flip and massive open online. The audiovisual technology requirements are constantly changing and improving, and they have an important impact on the architecture. The architecture in turn, has a significant impact on the resulting room acoustics, and excellent acoustics are paramount for speech intelligibility and communication. In this presentation, we will discuss how AV technologies and acoustical needs can blend in with the architectural vision in a holistic fashion, to contribute together to students’ success.
Learning Objectives:
Identify the types of technology that are common to classrooms that use digital media for higher-education.
Differentiate between active learning, distance learning/capture, massive open online, and flip classrooms.
Recognize how technology and applications of new and future technologies in the classroom affect the architecture.
Discuss the acoustical needs in the digital classroom and how to achieve them.
