My clinical and research focus is grounded in trauma, emergency surgery and surgical critical care with specific areas of focus including thoracic trauma and traumatic brain injury. As the University of Utah's Level I Trauma Center Medical Director and its trauma research director I am positioned to coordinate, conduct and facilitate research studies in the field. Additionally, my previous role as Chair of the Multi-Institutional Trials Committee for the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST-MITC) has allowed me to create relationships that have supported coordination between my own institutional activities with the national trauma research agenda while coordinating and facilitating research efforts among other major trauma centers across the US in multi-institutional trials.
The PCORI proposal we have assembled leverages my local and national positions so that we can complete the study objectives at our owls site as well as facilitate its completion at the other sites. The recovery of patients with rib fracture and the utility of rib fracture repair on clinical outcomes has been an interest of mine for over a decade. With the development of PCORI I am excited at the potential opportunity to address the outcomes important to patients and look forward to working with PCORI, our stakeholders and our patient experts to develop and conduct the largest study of rib fracture patients and the benefits of rib fracture repair.
