Lin Yueh-hwa’s autobiographical “novel” about his native village The Golden Wing: A Sociological
Study of Chinese Familism (1948) is now considered a classic ethnographic account of
precommunist China. In the 1970s Gary Seaman made a series of ethnographic films featuring
village life in a Taiwanese village. This film merges images from Taiwan with verbal ethnographic
description from Fujian to provide students with a multimodal integration of visual and written
ethnography of Chinese social life.
