Hong Kong is standing at a critical juncture in history. The 2019 anti-extradition law protests
are the largest and longest movement on record and directly challenge Beijing’s rule over the
territory. The feature-length documentary film Black Bauhinia looks at the background of the mass
movement. It outlines the rise of Hong Kong localism and independence movement as a reaction
to Chinese influence and the deterioration of human rights and democracy in the territory. The
dramatic societal consequences and emotional impact are highlighted through the fate of two of its
leading activists and their sacrifices are linked to the ongoing protests and unrest in Hong Kong.
