South & Southeast Asia
The ACC-sponsored participants include artists and museum curators whose work has evolved through investigation of historical materials and historiography as evidence of both colonizing and decolonizing processes, and where the investigations themselves comprise so many threads for creatively weaving historical fabric. Their practices variously question and reorganize accepted categories and systems of knowledge about “art,” “history,” and “Southeast Asia” as they intersect with constructions of the national and/or the global. As such, a recurring question for artists and curators working in the region today is the extent to which art is made ‘Southeast Asian’ as Southeast Asian Art is made. Participants will present and discuss their own and others’ work on these themes.
