Organized Panel Session
Despite his controversial administration, Rodrigo Duterte’s approval rating remains sky high. Why? How do we explain his appeal? Easy generalizations—frustration with elite democracy, for instance—won’t suffice. We need a “thick” understanding of “Dutertismo,” one deeply embedded in the historical, social, and cultural context of the Philippines. The aim of this panel is to approach such an understanding. We welcome papers on topics aligned with this aim, including Duterte’s political performance, the social bases of his appeal, the historical conditions for his ascent, the cultural context of his emergence and popularity, and international sources of support.
