Organized Panel Session
In the context of cultural trends in the world is flourishing such as American Pop Culture, Korean Wave, Chinese popular music (C-Pop), Cool Japan is considered as a national policy of Japan in order to “export” Japanese cultural values and introduce an image of “interesting Japan” to other countries. Through activities of government, ministries, research institutions, cultural exchange foundations, especially Japanese language classes, image of Japan is not only known as cherry blossoms (sakura), Fuji Mountain, Samurai soldiers but also modern cultural products such as Shinkansen, Shushi, Anime, Manga, Hello Kitty or Harajuku fashion. Cool Japan has revived the pride of the Japanese people after the "lost decade" through cultural influence spread throughout the region and the world.
This panel gathers interdisciplinary studies of Vietnamese scholars from research institutes and national university on how and what Cool Japan has established in Vietnam. The main methods we use are culturology and interdisciplinary methods through many perspectives, from language, literature, cuisine, to consumer culture, and comparison with trends of culture from China and Korea.
The AAS 2020 Annual Conference is a great opportunity for us to exchange our researches on this topic with international scholars to further clarify the key to success as well as challenges that Cool Japan is facing with today. Does Cool Japan continue to prevail over other cultural trends in Vietnam, in the region and all over the world? Does Cool Japan continue to be an element that helps shaping the position of Japan’s soft power?
