As our field continues to move towards community-based and person-centered supports, we need to look inward at how we are including direct-support professionals in designing this future. If direct support professionals are to be successful in this new era, they need a seat at the table in driving change.
During this session, we will share the experiences of change teams in two traditional day programs in New York City working to make the transformation from system-centered to person-centered. The teams will discuss how they built coalitions of direct support staff to help transformation efforts by developing roles around each person's unique talents & passions. Using participatory methodologies and community development strategies, these teams have helped lead a culture shift towards shared decision-making & inclusive supports. We will relate how John Kotter's model for leading change helped guide our efforts, so that attendees can extract lessons they can apply to their own unique challenges. The team will share the key insights, practices, and methodologies that have had the most impact in spreading influence & implementing change. Lastly, we will share how their experiences have helped inform our strategy for change & innovation at a larger scale.
