The Community Relations Service (CRS) is Department of Justice’s “Peacemaker” for community conflicts and tensions arising from difference in race, color, national origin, gender, gender identity, religion, and disability. CRS supports the intellectual and developmental disability (I/DD) communities interested in building local capacity to address conflicts, bias incidents, and hate crimes based on disability. CRS works with I/DD groups - as well as law enforcement, schools, faith-based organizations, government agencies, civil rights organization, and others – to address local issues that impact the safety of individuals with I/DD and the broader community.
This workshop includes an overview of CRS’s services – such as training for law enforcement on working with transgender communities, hate crime forums, facilitated dialogues, mediation, and public event planning – and case studies and will highlight best practices and resources available to participants. CRS services are free, confidential, and voluntary. CRS staff are impartial conciliators who do not investigate or prosecute.
In addition to CRS, there are other components within the Justice Department that work closely with the I/DDcommunity. This workshop will briefly go over those agencies as well, but will primarily focus on the CRS.
