Dr. Thorsten Kray is a shareholder and currently Head of Building Aerodynamics at I.F.I. Institut für Industrieaerodynamik GmbH (Institute for Industrial Aerodynamics LLC) in Aachen, Germany. In addition, he has been the leader of I.F.I.’s Solar Group for 9 years.
Over the years, Thorsten has undertaken numerous consulting activities and produced hundreds of technical reports which are mostly proprietary studies. These have covered wind tunnel tests to produce wind loads on roof and ground mounted solar structures, main wind force resisting system and cladding loads on tall buildings, wind environment assessments around buildings and a variety of other wind engineering topics.
As an Associate Member of the Structural Engineers Association of California (SEAOC) task group, he contributed to updating the PV2-2012 “Wind Design For Low-Profile Solar Photovoltaic Arrays On Flat Roofs” standard which finally led to the publication of the PV2-2017 “Wind Design for Solar Arrays” report. SEAOC reports formed the basis for ASCE 7-16, the only standard which currently contains a sound methodology for wind tunnel testing on solar arrays. Thorsten is also a key technical contributor to the German Wind Engineering Association’s update of the guideline on wind tunnel testing of buildings and structures.
Before joining I.F.I. in 2009, Thorsten worked as a research assistant and doctoral candidate at the University of Siegen, Germany, where he earned the degree as Doctor of Engineering (comparable to a Ph.D.) with a thesis on the flow over rotating smooth spheres and soccer balls.
