Background, description, delivery (400 words max)
The importance of this topic;
- Floating photovoltaic (FPV) systems is a promising market for water bodies in areas with high land costs for traditional ground-mounted PV, high evaporation and increasing utility rates. And while US has seem limited adoption of FPV to date, new NREL study Floating Photovoltaic Systems: Assessing the Technical Potential of Photovoltaic Systems on Man-Made Water Bodies in the Continental United States has pegged FPV as a “rapidly emerging technology” in the US with the estimated potential to generate around 10% of the annual current electricity production.
The informative and relevant nature of your topic;
- What is floating PV, where is it predominantly installed, and what is the global installed capacity to date? Compare completed projects by countries (ex: Japan vs. US) to highlight the market potential in the United States. Discuss the design of the systems and their ability to withstand high wind and wave loads, various extreme weather conditions, and fluctuating water levels. Explain the various energy and non-energy benefits compared to traditional ground-mounted systems. Share data from NREL report that demonstrate the potential of FPV:
“A total of 24 419 man-made water bodies, representing 27% of the number and 12% of the area of man-made water bodies in the contiguous United States, were identified as being suitable for FPV generation. FPV systems covering just 27% of the identified suitable water bodies could produce almost 10% of current national generation.”
Clear and immediate application to the learner’s work;
- At the end of the presentation the audience should have a clear understanding of the technical and market potential of floating PV in the US and how public or private institutions such as water treatment facilities, reservoirs owners (agricultural or industry sectors), and residential communities could benefit greatly from a floating PV application.
Who will benefit from this education (target audience)
- Investors, developers, installers, EPC, O&M providers, utilities, community solar programs, CCAs, banks, consultants/technical agencies, public and private entities, educators
