PV technology is evolving rapidly with the advent of bifacial, half-cell, and PERC modules. In particular, there is a growing interest by developers’ in bifacial modules for utility-scale applications. Due to its potential for cost-effective performance improvement, bifacial PV technology is experiencing market penetration prior to publication of formal industry-standard test procedures. It is, therefore, important that to promptly establish standardized performance and capacity test methodologies for this innovative technology. As Leidos has multiple requests from clients for performance and capacity test procedures, we have developed procedures to meet this demand. As part of this effort, Leidos has ensured that the bifacial test procedures are consistent with established industry standards while addressing the specific requirements of bifacial technology. Topics of consideration for this effort have included module bifaciality factor, weather corrections, and measurement of the rear-side irradiance and ground surface albedo. Particular attention has also focused on the test uncertainty calculations to account for the spatial uncertainty resulting from rear-side irradiance measurements. Developing these test procedures and ultimately implementing them as the industry group standards will support the solar community by formalizing the adoption of this significant technology advancement.
