This paper is a case history of a foundation design to support a flying amusement park ride located on a 120-year-old timber pier. The ride is Wings over Washington, a flying ride similar to Soarin’ over California at the Walt Disney theme park in southern California. The ride is on a concrete foundation supported by steel piles surrounded by a timber pier. The value of this paper is to demonstrate how the design team worked to resolve diametrically opposing requirements to create a successful project and increase the body of engineering knowledge.
