The Mw 7.8 2016 Ecuador Earthquake caused significant damage to the province of Manabí where the Port of Manta is located. The port has several facilities including a rock-filled breakwater, two international piers, seventeen small fishing marginal wharves, buildings, several storage yards, and roads. Most of its infrastructure experienced different levels of damage. After the earthquake, the port’s infrastructure went through a systematic process that included post-earthquake inspections and evaluations, the rehabilitation design of existing infrastructure, and the design of new facilities. Liquefaction and soil lateral spreading were determined as the main causes of the port damage. This paper presents the studies performed in order to seismically rehabilitate the facilities of the Port of Manta. First, the seismic damage is reported in every structure. Then, the paper describes the field and the analytical studies performed in order to determine the cause of the damages. Finally, the paper includes a description of the seismic rehabilitation strategies proposed for the main facilities.
