A study of Harn et al (2019) has concluded that steel pipe pile may suffer from premature buckling failure before reaching the strain limits in ASCE/COPRI 61-14 “Seismic Design of Piers and Wharves” (ASCE 61-14). Revised strain limits to prevent premature buckling have been proposed based on the piles’ D/t ratio which are much lower than the current strain limits for piles typically used for pile wharf design. This paper presents the results of a study carried out into effect on predicted performance with the revised strain limits on a typical container wharf, and options for adjusting the pile design to give a similar performance as predicted with the current strain limits have been investigated. Furthermore the effect on a possible increase in plastic hinge length for piles founded in soft clays have also been briefly studied.
