This paper will discuss aspects around the design and construction of the $112M design-built US Navy Pier 12 replacement at Naval Base San Diego in California. The paper will highlight the importance of all parties in both the design and construction phases participated with a partnering spirit to achieve a successful project. The pier layout to accommodate a series of US Navy ships with various geometries and constraints is critical for achieving an operationally well-functioning pier and the layout process will be explained. An environmentally friendly solution for recycling the old demolished pier will be presented. The pier is in a seismically active zone and some of the features based on the seismic design will be addressed. Examples of challenges both during the design and construction phases will be presented, including solutions to the challenges.
