Dr. Upul Atukorala is a Principal attached to Golder Associates’ Vancouver office. He has been with Golder for over 30 years and has worked on a large number of local, national and international multi-disciplinary projects.
Upul is a recognized specialist consultant in geotechnical earthquake engineering and leads a group of engineers at Golder focused on soil liquefaction, soil-structure interaction, soil dynamics and machine foundations, and ground improvement to mitigate soil liquefaction. He has been involved in the design, analysis and aocnstruction of port structures, LNG facilities, water retaining and tailings dams, pipeline crossings, LNG facilities, landfills, industrial and redisential structures. He has published a large number of technical papers and co-authored a chapter of the book on Ground Improvement for Mitigating Liquefaction-Induced Hazards, edited by Drs. Indraratna and Chu (Elsevier Publications, 2005).
Upul has served as a member of the Task Force on Geotechnical Design Guidelines for Buildings on Liquefiable Sites for Greater Vancouver Region (2007). He also served as the lead member of Seismic Design Guidelines for High Consequence Dikes in Lower Mainland (2014) prepared by Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations. He led a technical subcommittee focused on Seismic Design of Foundations of the Canadian Highway Bridge Code CSA S6-14. He has served as a Sessional Lecturer and a member of the Examination Committee of a number of Doctoral Candidates at the Deparment of Civil Engineering, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada.
