Sometimes when we manage change, we decide on a shift or a new direction and then we face the task of getting everyone else to buy in, get “onboard,” and execute the new process or set of behaviors. That makes causing change to happen a very difficult endeavor that typically faces a lot of resistance. If you’re a leader and you want to create sustainable change, think less about managing it and more about leading it. Create a dialogue with your team that lets people explore the change, question it, learn more about it and know the “why” behind it. Get their input about how the change will affect different people or areas of your practice. Move away from telling your employees about the change and think more strategically about how to help them understand and contribute to it. Leaders who incorporate their team into the change process are going to be much more successful at creating any sustainable change in their practice.
