Full Session with Abstracts
This paper outlines teaching strategies that have proved successful for both Millennials and Generation Z. Millennials have been characterized as having a strong sense of community both locally and globally. Specific techniques that have demonstrated superior learning outcomes for this group include immersive service learning experiences, including international service experiences and local STEM inner city educational opportunities. These techniques continue to engage and excite Generation Z.
The Great Recession had a significant impact on the attitudes of Generation Z; watching their Millennial siblings and parents struggle to enter or stay in the workforce has led to a suspicious view of large corporations and a stronger-than-average entrepreneurial desire. The introduction and development of entrepreneurial education modules targeted for Generation Z is also detailed. Specific teaching modules that incorporate entrepreneurship within basic mechanics courses and structural steel design is presented. The use of technology and student expectations for each generation are highlighted and compared.
Educational outcomes and extensive survey data on student perceptions is included. Audience members will leave the presentation with new tools and techniques that can be tailored to any structural engineering course.
