In Chapter 4 Design and Analysis Approaches of the Disproportionate Collapse Design Standard, the design objectives for the disproportionate collapse evaluation are set forth. This standard follows a performance based approach, and Chapter 4 defines the initiating events and subsequent performance levels to be considered for various categories of buildings. Non-threat specific initiating damage events are defined as notional initiating damage volumes, with some simplifications applied to make usage practical for designers. The user of the standard then evaluates the spread of this damage with respect to the area of influence of the damaged member. Chapter 4 provides performance objectives for the spread of damage that are tuned to the performance levels determined in Chapter 3 of the standard. This paper will outline the methodology contained in the standard and illustrate applications through examples.
