This discussion will focus on the new, 75,000 square foot Marine Studies Initiative Building currently under construction in Newport, OR. The project demonstrates how to build resiliently in a tsunami inundation zone, and incorporates the requirements of the ASCE 7-16 Chapter 6 Tsunami Provisions. A basis-of-design was developed to provide a performance based design approach for both the Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake and associated tsunami events. State of the art, site specific modeling was utilized to determine Cascadia Subduction Zone seismic ground motions and tsunami inundation depths, velocities, and large debris tracking. In addition to the various laboratories, classrooms, offices, and support spaces, the building also incorporates a vertical evacuation refuge and various way-finding features in order to provide a safe haven for those at the Hatfield campus on the Oregon coast.
