A Guideline for the application of the Alternative Load Path (ALP) analysis approach is being developed by the Disproportionate Collapse Technical Committee of the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) of ASCE. The Guideline is intended to complement a new standard on mitigation of disproportionate collapse, currently under development by the ASCE/SEI. An introduction and overview of the ALP analysis Guideline will be provided in this presentation. The introduction will cover the motivation for developing the Guideline and the relationship to the upcoming Disproportionate Collapse Standard. The overview of the ALP analysis Guideline will cover the details of Chapter 1, including a definition of Disproportionate Collapse and examples, the need for disproportionate collapse design and mitigation, the status of other codes/standards/guidelines that address disproportionate collapse, and a summary of methods for designing to resist disproportionate collapse. Special emphasis will be placed on presenting the analysis examples that are used throughout the document for validation of the analysis procedures. These include steel-framed building, reinforced concrete-framed building, and concrete shear wall building.
