This paper studies the use of optimization in design of concrete structures with shear walls subjected to lateral and gravity loads, with the effort to make the procedure more applicable in practice. Optimization objective includes minimizing the cost by minimizing the volume of the concrete. Architectural constraint are included to limit the design to those that meet the architect’s requirements. Other constraints of the optimization problem are considered to enforce the final design to meet the strength and serviceability requirements based on the building standards. Designs for an example structure using the proposed method is presented to illustrate the procedure, along with a discussion on the strengths and weaknesses of the method and comparison of the results with the actual design used for the project.
