Blast & Impact Loading & Response of Structures
The authors designed a six-story blast-resistant building to withstand blast loads of as high as 10.5 psi peak reflected pressure with 79 ms duration for “low damage” response criteria. We used the general-purpose finite element (FE) analysis software, ABAQUS, for the overall building response analysis, and used single degree of freedom (SDOF) analysis for the component design. This steel frame building with concrete floors is about 75 ft high with overall plan dimensions of 90 ft x 92 ft. The total building weight is about 3,500-ton. The building was constructed offsite for a single module and then transported to and installed on site. This paper presents a summary of our blast-resistant design results for the building, including performance criteria, blast load application considering phasing effect, boundary conditions, and analysis procedures. This paper also discusses other blast design and analysis considerations for multiple story buildings.
