Codes and Standards
Full Session without Abstracts
This session identifies changes to the 2018 International Building Code structural provisions. The presentation identifies changes in code requirements and design criteria, then considers the applicability of these requirements to the structural design of buildings. The session is based on the book the Significant Changes to the International Building Code, 2018 Edition.
I prefer to teach this course as an interactive session where I present the change and the group discusses what that change will mean in terms of design. Practicing engineers will apply this information in areas of the country adopting the 2018 IBC during 2019 and 2020. Or will move to ongoing design using the 2018 IBC and ASCE 7 as they are the current state of the art. This course and other similar courses describing changes to codes and standards help encourage practicing engineers to attend ASCE/SEI conferences. The section contains information the engineer can apply immediately or within the next six months. It is applicable to daily duties.
This presentation can be offered by itself or combined with a presentation of the significant changes to ASCE 7-16 design criteria.
